希望は羽の生えた生き物（Hope is the thing with feathers）：ディキンソンの詩から

　　歌声は大風でも聞こえてくる
　　こんなにも大勢の人をあたためる
　　この小さな鳥をいじけさせるなら
　　それはよほどひどい嵐にちがいない

　　凍てついた土地でも歌声が聞こえる
　　見知らぬ海でも聞いたことがある
　　でもどんなときであっても
　　パン屑ひとつねだったことがない

希望を鳥に譬え、その歌声が人を鼓舞するという。その鳥の歌声はどんなときにでも止むことがない。それをやめさせるような嵐があれば、それはよほどひどい嵐だ。

　　HOPE is the thing with feathers 
　　That perches in the soul, 
　　And sings the tune without the words, 
　　And never stops at all, 
  
　　And sweetest in the gale is heard;         
　　And sore must be the storm 
　　That could abash the little bird 
　　That kept so many warm. 
  
　　I 've heard it in the chillest land, 
　　And on the strangest sea;         
　　Yet, never, in extremity, 
　　It asked a crumb of me.
