詩人たちが歌う秋のほかに（Besides the autumn poets sing）：ディキンソンの詩から

　　いくらかのきびしい朝や
　　多少の禁欲的な夕べがある
　　ブライアンの「アキノキリンソウ」や
　　トムソンの「麦の束」はない

　　小川のせせらぎは静まり
　　香ばしい花弁は閉じられ
　　催眠術師の指が
　　妖精の目にそっと触れる

　　リスはまだいるかもしれない
　　わたしの気持ちに寄り添うために
　　主よどうぞ　陽気な心をお与えください
　　あなたの風の意志に堪えられるような

秋は詩情を掻き立てる季節であるが、ただの散文的な日々もある。そういう日々は人の心を寒くしがちなので、どうか陽気で暖かい心を持ってゐたいものだ、そんな気持ちを歌った詩であろう

　　BESIDES the autumn poets sing, 
　　A few prosaic days 
　　A little this side of the snow 
　　And that side of the haze. 
  
　　A few incisive mornings,         
　　A few ascetic eves,-- 
　　Gone Mr. Bryant's golden-rod, 
　　And Mr. Thomson's sheaves. 
  

　　Still is the bustle in the brook, 
　　Sealed are the spicy valves;         
　　Mesmeric fingers softly touch 
　　The eyes of many elves. 
  
　　Perhaps a squirrel may remain, 
　　My sentiments to share. 
　　Grant me, O Lord, a sunny mind,         
　　Thy windy will to bear!
