わたしは美のために死んだ（I died for beauty, but was scarce）：ディキンソンの詩から

　　どうして死んだかとその人は訪ねた
　　美のためよとわたしは答えた
　　僕は真実のためさとその人はいった 
　　ふたつは同じもの　僕らは兄妹さと

　　そして夜に出会った親戚のように
　　私たちは壁を隔てて話し込んだ
　　苔が私たちの唇にせまり
　　私たちの名前を覆ってしまうまで

この詩はキーツの"Ode to the Greecian Urn"の中の有名な一節、"Beauty is truth, truth beauty"を踏まえていると思われる。

　　I DIED for beauty, but was scarce 
　　Adjusted in the tomb, 
　　When one who died for truth was lain 
　　In an adjoining room. 
  
　　He questioned softly why I failed?         
　　"For beauty," I replied. 
　　"And I for truth,--the two are one; 
　　We brethren are," he said. 
  
　　And so, as kinsmen met a night, 
　　We talked between the rooms,        
　　Until the moss had reached our lips, 
　　And covered up our names.
