T.S.エリオットの詩「荒地」から「雷がいったこと」２（壺齋散人訳）
ここには水がなく岩ばかりだ
岩ばかりで水はなく砂の道がある
山々のあいだをくねくねと続いている道
その山は水のない岩山なのだ
水があれば立ちどまって飲むところだが
岩の間では立ちどまることも考えることも出来ぬ
汗は乾き 足は砂の中だ
岩の間に水さえあれば
奇妙な歯をした口のような死んだ山では唾も吐けぬ
ここでは立つことも横たわることも座ることも出来ぬ
山の中には沈黙さえもない
雨を伴わぬ乾いた不毛な雷がなるだけだ
山の中には孤独さえもない
赤い不機嫌な顔が 裂けた泥の家のドアから
歯をむいてあざ笑うだけだ
水があって
岩がなければ
岩があっても
水があれば
そう 水が
泉があれば
岩の間にプールがあれば
せめて水の音さえすれば
蝉の声でもなく
乾いた草の音でもなく
岩を超える水の音があれば
ツグミが松の枝にとまって鳴くことだろう

でも水がないんだ
この節は不毛の荒地をいく旅人のイメージが歌われているのだろう。水のない荒地を行くと、ツグミの声が水の音のように聞こえてくる。そのツグミの声を、エリオットはケベックできいたことがあると、原注の中でいっている。
Here is no water but only rock

The road winding above among the mountains
Which are mountains of rock without water
If there were water we should stop and drink
Amongst the rock one cannot stop or think
Sweat is dry and feet are in the sand
If there were only water amongst the rock
