いつも君のそばを歩いているあいつは誰だい？
数えてみると僕と君しかいないんだけど
あの白い道のほうを見上げると
君のそばにはいつももうひとりいる
ブラウンのマントに身を包んでフードをつけてる
男か女かわからないけれど
君の向う側にいるあいつは誰なんだい？
空高く聞こえてくるあの音はなんだい？
母親たちの悲しみのつぶやきかい
あのフードをつけた一群の人々は誰だい？
果てしなき荒野を台地の裂け目によろめきつつ進む
背景をなしているのは地平線だけだ
あの山の彼方の町はどんな町だい？

前の節は、南極探検記の一つから着想したと、原注にある。南極で体力の限界に達すると、隊員たちは自分たちのほかにもう一人別の人がいるような幻想にかられるという。
後の節は、ヘルマン・ヘッセの「混沌を見る」から着想。そこには、東ヨーロッパは混沌への途上にあり、人々は聖なる幻想に酔っているとある。
